Increased Site Traffic From Social Bookmarking

January 24, 2009 – 10:44 am

Not too long ago I was looking for ways to have a site submitted to lots of social bookmarking sites. I have, of course, bookmarked many of my own pages in bookmarking services along with the other sites I visited, but was curious to see what impact a concerted “bookmarking campaign” might have.

I observed some interesting things from it….

The ultimate impact was exactly what I had suspected, there was an initial burst in traffic directly from the social bookmarking site, but there was also a delayed impact. On the first site I tried this with, I saw a noticeable increase in traffic from “other sources” within about 3-5 days after the social bookmarking submission. This bump wasn’t a direct impact of people browsing the social sites, but search engine traffic.

I had somewhat expected this, but the reality is that I saw a bigger impact than I expected. I repeated this experiment across several sites and only one or two didn’t seem to have as impressive performance. These two sites have less content than the rest and also have fewer offsite links period.

My suspicion is that a good mix of “types” of backlinks is ultimately the best for increasing your search traffic and this seems to back it up. Social Bookmarking should definitely be a component of your backlink building strategy though.
