Posting Schedule or why I won’t be Posting Every Day
May 13, 2009 – 4:12 pm
Once upon a time I had a site that was making a good deal of money with adsense. It was thrilling, exciting and in retrospect I suspect it was because I was posting ALL the time. At the peak (had a couple $30 days and one $60 day) I was posting dozens of entries a day. First thing I would do is skim news headlines in my RSS feed reader and look for “post worthy” stories and then I’d comment, elaborate, collate and keep chasing the same thing all day. This was from getting out of bed, to heading to bed. It was in a word exhausting. I couldn’t keep that pace up and the earnings trailed off, then Google changed their search algorithm and the remaining traffic collapsed leaving me with less than a dollar each day in income. My other work at that time was busy enough that I didn’t have time to do much to figure out what happened, on top of that I was disappointed and didn’t really want to think about it.
After a bit of “mourning” for the traffic collapse, I started looking into what had happened and what would need to happen to get traffic again. I found essentially many people asking the same questions and by and large assuming they had not done anything that violated googles terms, people were suggested that they needed more links pointing to their site to get better search rankings. My take on the big daddy update is that a greater emphasis or weighting had been placed on inbound links from other sites and shifted away from either 1) content or 2) inlinks from the same site.
I spent a fair amount of time figuring out how that was done and due to fluctuations in the level of my other work didn’t get back to it until 2008. For various reasons though in 2008 I resolved to get more serious about developing my online revenue. I have had health issues which made one if not both of my current lines of work difficult if not doubtful for the future, a new baby born in early 2008 and a fair amount of debt. (This batch mostly caused by medical bills.)
In addition to that, I have the realization that everything I do offline is limited. I charge by the hour for the work that I do. There are only so many hours in the day and to make more you either book more time or raise your rates. So, there is a theoretical maximum to what you could realistically earn with what I do offline.
So, I’ve gone through several ideas, bux.to, clickbank and finally now back to adsense and I’ve been applying what I learned over the last few years. As I started into it again I was somewhat suckered by the people saying that you needed to keep fresh content flowing on your site to rank well in search results on google. That sounds too close to what I chased before and frankly, I see many contradictions to that idea.
Why is it that I can go and search on a variety of phrases and find pages that haven’t been updated in 3+ years?
They have lot’s of backlinks and are specifically about the phrase you searched for. The backlinks probably also have fragments of that search phrase (if not the complete search phrase) as the anchor text as well. So, you have a three way match of search terms – content on the page, anchor text for the links to the page and the search itself.
So, at times I’ve said that I’d be posting once a week here, but going forward I probably won’t post that often. Once a month is what I would like to do, but the reality is the mood may strike and I may post a few things in one day, or it may be three or four months between posts. I am however committed to developing this site and adding resources for those of you that want to earn money online with a blog.
Obviously this site is also a resource for me as it gives me a way to organize many of the things I’ve found and want to remember on the topic of earning money online. I’ve run across many approaches other than adsense and some of them I want to revisit sometime when I have a bit more capital to fund some experimentation.
The bottom line is that I’m not going to return to the 2 dozen post a day rat race that I once did on another site and frankly committing to any strict posting regimen is just not something I’ll do. I’ll post here from time to time and work on making this site a good resource. Thanks for stopping by, check back again!
